What does it truly mean to forgive—and why does forgiveness change the course of history?

After the death of Jacob, Joseph’s brothers feared that the forgiveness Joseph once offered them might not have been real. Had he only restrained himself out of respect for their father? In this powerful reflection on Genesis, we revisit one of the most transformative moments in the Bible: Joseph’s decision to forgive those who betrayed him.

This episode marks a turning point not only in the story of Joseph, but in human moral history itself. For the first time, forgiveness replaces revenge. The cycle of sibling rivalry—Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Esau—finally comes to an end. Only through reconciliation can the story move forward, allowing Israel to emerge as a nation and humanity to glimpse a new moral vision.

The ideas are shaped and based on the work of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, and influenced by Maimonides, Nachmanides, Don Isaac Abarbanel, Samson Raphael Hirsch, David Zvi Hoffmann, Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel, and Uri Amos Cherki.
